III. Project Manager Updates:

Olivia-- Banned Books Week

Olivia updated the group on holding a film screening at the Gallagher theater at the Student Union. They will give us a discounted price ($100) to show the film as we will be offering it as a free screening to the entire community. The group discussed which movie to show and decided to pursue Lord of the Flies (newer version) and Slaughter House Five. We will also be collaborating with Rebecca from the Main UA library to put together a display of banned books. PLG members are asked to bring in banned books to lend for the display. Please bring the books to our next meeting on September 9th. Yamila will contact some people to be guest speakers at a panel discussion on banned books. We will ask Rebecca to share her presentation, as well. Olivia will ask Rebecca about room availability.

Kristen-- Books to Belize

This successful project culminated with four large suitcases full of hardback books sent to Belize this summer.  The books were donations from the Pima County, Phoenix, and Tempe Public Library Systems.  The parent chapter of PLG has endorsed sending books to Gaza. The UA chapter is strongly considering this option as the next international development project.

Kristen-- Dry River Collective

The representatives from the Dry River Collective work few hours in the summer, so consistent communication has not been possible.  Closer collaboration is expected in the coming months.

Angelina— Accessibility Workshop

Angelina is project manager for the Accessibility workshop, which is to be held later in the fall.  Attending members settled on two possible dates, 9/16 and 10/14.  Angelina will contact the speaker, to see if either date works.  The group agreed that 5:30 would be the earliest we would like to hold the event, to accommodate working students.

Yamila-- Skill Share

The group determined 10/28 and 10/14 as possible dates for this function, pending confirmation of the date of the Accessibility workshop.  Every effort will be made by Nicole Pagowsky, to attend and share a skill, but planning will go ahead in either case.

IV. Read Between the Bars

Yamila and Ramona volunteered to be co-Project Managers for this project.

V. Fall Social -- Welcome New Students

A PLG social for new SIRLS students was discussed.  An ice cream social, to be held in the middle of September, was agreed upon.  Austin’s is the likely location.  Brenda is going to call the venue to find out if they will agree to a percentage night.

VI. Open Floor/Closing

Brenda-- Graduate Student Symposium

Brenda announced November 14th to be the target date of the symposium.  She explained that LSO has yet to find a keynote speaker.  Yamila agreed to get in touch with James Matarazzo, Dean of Simmons LIS school.  Brenda also described many different support positions open.  Ramona signed up to help with the symposium.  Tanya Hladky, LSO member, will host a Taco Pool Party at her home on September 13th, as a means of recruiting help for the Symposium, as well as serving as a social function.  Tanya is taking the lead on organizing the symposium.
