BLURB FOR UA NEWS: Observed since 1982, Banned Books Week is an annual event promoted by the American Library Association. It celebrates the freedom to read and reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. This year on the UA campus, students from the School of Information Resources and Library Science, in collaboration with the UA Libraries, are sponsoring a number of events that are free and open to the public. The Progressive Librarians Guild - UA Chapter, is leading the effort.

From September 26th through October 9th, there will be a Banned Books Exhibit just off of the Main Library lobby in Research West. Come take a look at challenged books, articles written about questioned literature, and more.

On Monday night, September 28th, starting at 7pm there will be a free film fest about challenged books held at the Gallagher theater in the student union. On Wednesday, 9/30 there will be a number of events held in front of the Main Library exhibit. A viewing of the short documentary film "Writers and Censorship" will begin at 6:00pm, followed by a "Read Out!" where campus and community members are invited to read passages from their favorite challenged materials. To close the evening will be a panel discussion about the importance of access to diversity of ideas in a democratic society. Come join others around campus in challenging censorship and celebrating our freedom to read!

Maria Castillo's friend, Emily Jacobson, left a message for her friend, Jennifer Mullet(sp?), the school librarian that served on a panel for 504. I should hear this evening if she is interested/available.
