PLG meeting, 9/9/09, meeting officially started at 5:30
I. Introductions Members in attendance:
II. Officer Updates
Diana— Reports a total balance of $878.95. $223 was collected from the raffle for Books to Belize. Olivia— Reminded group members to email her to get access to the PLG wiki and Listserv Yamila— Looked into grants and other sources of funding and is still waiting on responses. Possibly looking to companies for event funding. Kristen— A new PLG chapter contacted our chapter and the email that has been sent out in similar situations was passed around the group for editing in anticipation of responding to this new chapter. SIRLS student organizations have been approached regarding revamping the student lounge. The issue will be discussed back until after Banned Book Week. Molly, the SIRLS website graduate assistant, has contacted Kristen requesting pictures of the PLG chapter engaged in activities for the SIRLS website. Plans were made to take pictures of the Banned Book display and group members for this purpose.
III. Project Manager Updates--Fall Calendar
Kristen-- Dry River Collective
With the summer coming to an end, the representatives of the Dry River Collective are now more available for contact. Kristen mentioned that if any members want to work on this project they should ask to be put on the listserv.
Yamila-- Skill Share The group will discuss finalizing a date during the next meeting in order to get the skill share going.
Yamila-- Read Between the Bars Yamila and Ramona volunteered to be co-Project Managers for this project last week. Yamila made contact with the organization, but has yet to get a response.
IV. Banned Books Week Olivia is talking with a representative from Criterion about the cost of screening The Grades of Wrath for the film screening at the Gallagher Theater. The original choices of films (Lord of the Flies and Slaughter-House Five) were owned by a company that asked too much money for licensing rights (approx. $400). Criterion has not yet responded with a price, and so other options were discussed. These options include looking into films in the public domain; specifically the silent version of The Wizard of Oz. Rebecca will discuss the issue with the UA copyright librarian. Kristen suggested selecting a local film and contacting the Loft Cinema. A grant may be applied for to pay for the licensing rights.
Members brought personal copies of banned books for the display at the Main Library. Ideas about visual aids in addition to the books are needed. Set up for the display was determined for 2:00-4:00 Friday, September 25th.
The time of the panel was discussed and September 30th at 7:00 pm was agreed upon. Rebecca reserved Research West for the panel discussion, in the lobby of the UA Main Library by the exhibit. Speakers for the panel have yet to be determined with the exception of Rebecca. Yamilla has a possible speaker. The Political Science, English and Women’s Studies departments, Wingspan and Tucson Public Schools will be contacted for possible panelists. UA news has given us the opportunity to alert the campus about Banned Book Week. This is being written collaboratively on the wiki. Fliers are needed by next Wednesday, September 16th in order to advertise the panel discussion and the film screening. Jeffery volunteered to make the panel flier.
V.Fall Social Plans-- Welcome New Students It has been decided that the fall social will take place at Austin’s (2920 E Broadway) at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 22nd. This date is pushed back a week in order to have time to spread the word via email.
